According to VISIT HACHINOHE, eight yokocho alleys, each with its own character, criss-cross central Hachinohe. Many places are counter-style and easy to enter alone, and the alleys also hold long-running bars alongside ethnic, curry and ramen shops.
The alleys grew up as places to feed and pour for fishermen back from the sea, and took shape as an entertainment district after the war, starting with a market for repatriates. The prefectural government is at Nagashima 1-chome in Aomori City, which is so far the only area this site has in the prefecture.
Shin-Aomori is about three hours from Tokyo on the Tohoku Shinkansen; from Osaka, add about 2 hours 30 minutes on the Tokaido Shinkansen to Tokyo and change there. By air, Aomori Airport is about 1 hour 20 minutes from Haneda, about 1 hour 30 minutes from Osaka Itami and about 50 minutes from New Chitose.
NIGHT LIFE JAPAN groups Aomori under one division, Aomori City, with a single area of that name below it. Hostess clubs, snack bars and girls bars in the prefecture's other cities, Hachinohe's yokocho included, do not yet have areas of their own.
Aomori is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
