Nakasu is the entertainment district on a long, narrow island between the Naka and Hakata rivers in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka. Walk south from Nakasu-Kawabata subway station and the buildings of hostess clubs and lounges run along the water.
The nearest station is Nakasu-Kawabata on the Kuko and Hakozaki subway lines: three stops from Fukuoka Airport on the Kuko line, one from Hakata, one from Tenjin. The station sits at the island's north end, and the standard route is south down Nakasu-odori. You can also walk from Hakata Station, and the Suisha bridge links Nakasu to Kawabata next door.
Nakasu is a long island running north to south, with Nakasu-odori down its spine and multi-tenant buildings in the lanes on either side. Hostess clubs (kyabakura), lounges, clubs, snack bars, girls bars and host clubs share each building several to a floor, so read the signboard for the name and floor before you go up. Food stalls (yatai) line the riverbank, and plenty of people eat there first and then head into the island.
Canal City Hakata stands near the island's south end and Kushida Shrine, the guardian shrine of Hakata, is across the river in Kawabata, so daytime sights and a Nakasu night fit into one walkable area.
Fukuoka City's ordinance bans soliciting unspecified people in public places for adult-entertainment and hostess-style dining businesses, and waiting around to do so, with fines of up to 500,000 yen since the June 2025 amendment. Do not follow anyone who approaches you on Nakasu-odori; check the price board for the hourly set fee, nomination (shimei) fee and drink charges before going in.
