Nakasu

At night, Nakasu's neon lights reflect off the river, making the whole area glitter. Located in central Hakata, this triangular island between the Nakagawa and Hakata rivers is compact and walkable.

Nakasu is counted among Japan's three major entertainment districts, with astonishing density. Step off the main street and you'll find hostess bars, girls bars, and snack bars lining every alley. The main arteries are Nakasu Chuo-dori and Showa-dori, bustling until late.

The nightlife core is the kyabakura (hostess bar) scene, with hundreds of venues. Prices run about 3,000–5,000 yen per 30 minutes. Girls bars are more casual, often with all-you-can-drink for 2,000–3,000 yen. Snack bars cater to regulars, offering karaoke and a social atmosphere. Host clubs are also present, targeting female customers.

Nakasu is known for its low barrier to entry—salarymen in suits and tourists alike can bar-hop easily. However, hostess bars and host clubs add service charges, so confirm pricing before entering.

Access: a short walk from Nakasu-Kawabata subway station, 15 minutes from Fukuoka Airport via subway. Best time is 8–11 PM; weekends are crowded. English-speaking staff are rare, but translation apps work fine.

A word of caution: ignore touts and scouts. Avoid walking alone late at night; take a taxi instead.
