Nakasu, in Hakata Ward, is a small island-like district with the Naka River to the west and the Hakata River to the east, and the Japan National Tourism Organization calls it Fukuoka's entertainment heartland. After dark it fills with eateries, food stalls and people out for the evening; the nearest station is Nakasu-Kawabata on the Kuko subway line.
Tenjin, in Chuo Ward, brings together shops, bars, restaurants and entertainment, and Oyafuko-dori north of the station is one of the hubs of Fukuoka's nightlife. A Kitakyushu council report from January 2026 describes Kajimachi, Sakaimachi and Konyamachi in Kokura as an entertainment district made up mostly of eateries.
By subway, Fukuoka Airport's domestic terminal is about 5 minutes from Hakata Station and about 10 from Tenjin Station. The subway does not connect to the international terminal; change to the free shuttle bus at Fukuoka Airport Station.
Kokura is about 15 minutes from Hakata Station by Shinkansen. Kitakyushu's tourism site gives about 30 minutes from Fukuoka Airport by subway and Shinkansen, and about 45 minutes from Kitakyushu Airport by airport bus.
Fukuoka City is listed by ward: Hakata Ward (Nakasu, Hakata Station Front, Kawabata, Sumiyoshi/Minoshima, Zasshokuma), Chuo Ward (Tenjin / Oyafuko-dori, Haruyoshi/Nishi Nakasu, Yakuin/Kiyokawa, Central Other), Nishi Ward (Meinohama, Western Capital), Higashi Ward (Hakozaki, Kashumigaoka, Kashii, Washiro), Sawara Ward (Nishishin) and Minami Ward (Takamiya/Ohashi/Ijiri).
Beyond the city, the areas are Kitakyushu City (Kokura, Kurosaki/Yahata/Orio), Kurume City, Itoshima City (Maehara), Onojo City (Shirakibara), Chikushino City (Futsukaichi, Asakura Street), Munakata City (Munakata/Akama), Iizuka City, Omuta City/Okawa City (Taisho Town, Ōkawa), Kasuya District (Shingu Town) and Tagawa City.
A Fukuoka City ordinance bans approaching unspecified people in public places such as roads, parks and stations to bring them in as customers for sexual services or hostess-style drinking. The penalty is a fine of up to 500,000 yen, detention or a petty fine, and up to six months' imprisonment or 1,000,000 yen for habitual offenders. JNTO also advises checking the price before you enter a bar.
Kitakyushu's ordinance on touting designates part of Uomachi and Kyomachi in Kokura as a no-touting zone, and city documents put the penalty at a non-penal fine of up to 50,000 yen. On extending the zone to Kajimachi, Sakaimachi and Konyamachi, the January 2026 report said the decision should wait until local efforts are under way.

Fukuoka is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
Payment methods vary by venue. Check the listing and confirm with the venue before booking.
