The Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau presents Kitashinchi as Kita's upscale entertainment district of bars, clubs, snack bars and small restaurants, and notes that after the war it became a place for business talks known as the "nighttime Chamber of Commerce". It covers about 500 m by 250 m between National Route 2 and the Dojima River.
In Minami the representative district is Dotonbori, whose past as a quarter of theatres and kabuki led to today's street of food and entertainment. Restaurants line both sides, and the tourism bureau lists it as a place that stays open late.
Article 5 of Osaka's ordinance limits the places where hostess bars and similar venues may open until 1 a.m. to parts of Kita-ku and Chuo-ku in Osaka City set by Public Safety Commission rules. Elsewhere they close at midnight, except on special days such as the year-end holidays.
Shin-Osaka is 2 hours 21 minutes from Tokyo on the Tokaido Shinkansen. For Kitashinchi use JR Tozai Line Kitashinchi Station, and for Dotonbori the Nankai or Kintetsu Namba stations or Osaka Metro; both districts start right outside the station.
From Kansai International Airport the Nankai Rapi:t takes you to Nankai Namba without a change. From Kyoto, the JR Special Rapid reaches Osaka Station in about 30 minutes; the Hankyu Kyoto Line arrives at Osaka-umeda and the Keihan Limited Express at Yodoyabashi.
NIGHT LIFE JAPAN lists Osaka under five major areas: Osaka City; Minami Kawachi; Sakai, Sennan; North Kawachi / East Osaka; and Northern Settsu. Outside Osaka City, Tondabayashi and Fujiidera belong to Minami Kawachi, while Sakai, Sakaihigashi, Nakamozu, Kishiwada and Izumisano・Sennan belong to "Sakai, Sennan". Yao, Hirakata and Neyagawa, Fuse, Moriguchi and Kadoma, and Hyotan-yama form North Kawachi / East Osaka, and Suita · Esaka, Toyonaka / Ikeda, Takatsuki and Minoo are among the Northern Settsu areas.
Osaka City's ordinance on touting took effect on 1 June 2014, and since 27 October that year parts of Minami and Kita have been no-touting zones. Inside them touting is banned in principle; anyone who ignores an order to stop faces a fine of up to 50,000 yen.
Listed in Osaka right now: Girls Bar (9 venues), Concept Cafe (8 venues), Lounge (1 venue), and Snack Bar (1 venue). You pay a set fee by the hour, with nomination (shimei) and drink charges on top, so confirm the total with each venue before you sit down.
Osaka is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
Payment methods vary by venue. Check the listing and confirm with the venue before booking.
