Also known as: ヘルプ · herupu · Helper · 헬프 · 帮手 · 幫手
A system where a substitute cast member temporarily provides service in place of the nominated cast member.
Helper (herupu) is a system in Japanese nightlife where a substitute cast member temporarily provides service when the nominated cast member is unavailable.
This arrangement is common in hostess clubs and girls bars. When a customer's nominated cast member is absent due to illness or other commitments, a helper steps in to ensure the customer's experience continues smoothly. The helper performs the same role as the regular cast, but no nomination fee is charged; instead, a helper fee is typically added to the bill.
Helpers are often colleagues or friends of the nominated cast member, chosen to maintain a comfortable atmosphere. Customers can choose to accept the helper or request an alternative arrangement.
Pricing varies by venue, but helper fees are generally lower than standard nomination fees. Tipping or buying drinks for the helper is considered good etiquette, just as with regular cast members.
When you'll encounter this
In Japan, this term is used when the venue explains, 'We will have a helper cast member serve you today,' due to the nominated cast member's absence.
