Ishikawa's official tourism site calls Katamachi and Korinbo in central Kanazawa the prefecture's leading shopping districts, with department stores in Korinbo and restaurants and boutiques in Katamachi. Katamachi is also a modern nightlife district, with venues from craft-beer bars to techno clubs, some of them busy until late.
For a quieter night the same site suggests izakaya or jazz bars. Hostess clubs (kyabakura), snack bars, lounges and girls bars are grouped under the Katamachi area, and under the Kanazawa Station area if you would rather stay near the station.
The south of the prefecture is the Kaga area, and JNTO describes JR Kaga Onsen Station as its hub. Yamashiro Onsen lies inland on the other side of the station, a hot-spring town where you can bathe in Meiji-era style baths. On a night at an onsen inn, look in the Yamashiro Onsen area.
Komatsu Airport has domestic and international flights, and JNTO notes that Kaga Onsen Station is easy to reach from it. If you are spending the night near the airport or at the hot springs rather than in Kanazawa, see the Komatsu and Yamashiro Onsen areas.
JNTO gives about 2 hours 30 minutes from Tokyo to Kanazawa on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, and about 2 hours from Osaka or Kyoto. The fastest on JR East's timetable is Kagayaki 503 at 2 hours 24 minutes, and JR West's figures for the 16 March 2024 timetable put both Osaka and Nagoya 2 hours 9 minutes from Kanazawa at best.
Flying from Haneda to Komatsu takes roughly an hour; the limousine bus from Komatsu Airport into Kanazawa Station is about 40 minutes, per the city's tourism association. From Osaka to Kaga-Onsen the fastest trip at the same timetable was 2 hours 6 minutes with a change at Tsuruga.
Ishikawa is divided into Kanazawa City, Komatsu City and Kaga City, with the Kanazawa Katamachi and Kanazawa Station areas in Kanazawa City, Komatsu in Komatsu City and Yamashiro Onsen in Kaga City. Since 1 June 2014 Ishikawa's nuisance-prevention ordinance has banned touting for hostess-style venues and similar businesses, and the Katamachi scramble crossing is a designated anti-touting point. If someone approaches you, do not follow; choose the venue yourself.
Ishikawa is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
