Morioka, where the prefectural offices stand in Uchimaru, is a little over two hours from Tokyo by JNTO's account. This site treats Morioka and Kitakami as one area each, and the area pages show where the hostess clubs (kyabakura), snack bars and girls bars are.
Morioka Station is about 2 hours 10 minutes from Tokyo on the Tohoku Shinkansen. Flights reach Iwate Hanamaki Airport from New Chitose in roughly an hour and from Osaka Itami in roughly 1 hour 20 minutes. Coming from Sapporo by rail, change from the Super Hokuto to the Hokkaido Shinkansen at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto.
NIGHT LIFE JAPAN splits Iwate into Morioka and Kitakami, with one area of the same name under each. Hanamaki and the prefecture's other towns are not yet separate areas.
Iwate is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
