Tenmonkan is the downtown district of Kagoshima City, and the city's tourism site ranks it the largest in Southern Kyushu. Its arcade lets you eat and shop even when it rains, izakaya and bars are plentiful, and weekend evenings are said to be the busiest. By city tram, get off at Tenmonkan-dori.
The limousine bus from Kagoshima Airport reaches Kagoshima-Chuo Station in about 38 minutes. Kagoshima-Chuo is the southern end of the Kyushu Shinkansen, which became a through line when Hakata to Shin-Yatsushiro opened in 2011, the same year through-running with the Sanyo Shinkansen began.
JR Kyushu gives 4 hours at the fastest between Kagoshima-Chuo and Shin-Osaka on a direct Shinkansen. According to Miyazaki City's tourism association, Kagoshima-Chuo to Miyazaki Station is about 2 hours by train. Kirishima-Jingu Station is about 49 minutes away on the Kirishima limited express, changing at Kokubu.
Kagoshima is split into five parts: Kagoshima City, Kirishima City, Satsumasendai City, Amami City and Nishinoomote City. Their areas are Tenmonkan and Kagoshima Chuo Station, Kokubun Central, Sendai, Amami Oshima and Tanegashima respectively.
Kagoshima City's ordinance banning touting took effect on 1 October 2023. Its no-touting zone covers all of Sennichi-cho and Yamanokuchi-cho and parts of Higashi-Sengoku-cho, Gofuku-machi and other blocks. Nobody may tout inside the zone, and ignoring an order can bring a fine of up to 50,000 yen.
Kagoshima is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
