The Niigata Prefectural Tourist Association, which runs the Niigata tourism navigator site, describes Furumachi in central Niigata City as a district that once flourished as a geisha quarter. Step into its alleys and the old atmosphere remains, along with many shops locals have frequented for years.
The Furumachi Kagai information centre is on Furumachi-dori 9-bancho, about 8 minutes by car from JR Niigata Station. This site lists the Niigata Station front and Furumachi as separate areas, so you can look for hostess clubs (kyabakura), snack bars and lounges on whichever side is closer to your hotel.
Heading from Tokyo to Niigata on the Joetsu Shinkansen, the fastest train on JR East's timetable is Toki 311, which stops only at Omiya, at 1 hour 29 minutes. If you are getting off at Nagaoka, Toki 35, which stops at Takasaki, takes 1 hour 27 minutes. Joetsu-Myoko is on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, about an hour from Takasaki.
By air, Niigata Airport has domestic flights from Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka (Itami), Kobe and Fukuoka. Niigata Station is about 25 to 33 minutes from the airport by limousine or route bus, so even an early-evening arrival leaves time to reach Furumachi or the station front that night.
Niigata is divided into three parts: Niigata/Shibata, Nagaoka/Sanjo and Joetsu/Kashiwazaki. Niigata/Shibata has the Niigata Station front, Furumachi, Shibata and Kaetsu (others); Nagaoka/Sanjo has Tonmachi, Hondera Alley, Tsubame-Sanjo and Chuetsu Other; Joetsu/Kashiwazaki has Takada, Naoetsu, Kashiwazaki and Joetsu and others.
Niigata is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
