Also known as kerama-islands
The Kerama Islands are a remote island group about 40 km west of Okinawa's main island, with very limited nightlife. There are a few small izakayas and guesthouse bars, but no table-service nightlife venues like hostess bars or host clubs.
The Kerama Islands are a resort area known for crystal-clear waters and beautiful beaches. During the day, tourists flock for diving and snorkeling, but at night, tranquility sets in.
This area is about an hour by ferry from Naha on Okinawa's main island, with inhabited islands like Zamami, Aka, and Geruma. The islands are small with sparse populations, so nightlife options are extremely limited.
Regarding nightlife, there are no table-service venues such as hostess bars (kyabakura), host clubs, girls bars, snack bars, or concept cafes. Instead, there are a few bars run by guesthouses or small hotels, and a handful of small izakayas where locals gather.
At these izakayas, you can enjoy awamori or Orion beer along with local dishes. Prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is welcoming to tourists. However, few places stay open late, and many close early.
Access is by ferry from Naha Port: about 50 minutes by high-speed boat to Zamami Island, and about 70 minutes to Aka Island. For nightlife, Naha city offers far more options, so if you stay overnight, it's best to enjoy the islands during the day and have a quiet evening.
Tips for enjoying the night on the islands: check operating hours in advance, and enjoy interacting with locals. English is limited, but gestures and smiles go a long way.
Kerama Islands runs on table-service venues: kyabakura (hostess clubs), girls bars, and snack bars. You pay a set fee by the hour, with nomination (shimei) and drink charges on top, so check each venue’s all-in price before you sit down.
Kerama Islands is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
Popular services in Kerama Islands include girls bars (flat drink charge, conversational setting), karaoke snack bars, and hostess clubs with shimei nomination options.
