Kawagoe, Sakado, Higashimatsuyama

At night, Kawagoe's historic warehouse district is lit up, showing a different face from daytime. Along the shopping street from the station, neon signs of hostess bars and girls bars glow, bustling with local office workers and tourists.

The area is divided into the west and east exits of Kawagoe Station, with the west side being the main entertainment district. Sakado and Higashimatsuyama are about 20 minutes by train from Kawagoe, dotted with more local snack bars and izakayas.

Around Kawagoe Station, there are about 50 hostess bars and over 30 girls bars clustered. Prices are relatively reasonable: hostess bars cost 5,000–8,000 yen for 60 minutes, girls bars 3,000–5,000 yen. Snack bars are common in the backstreets, serving as adult social spots where you chat with the mama.

The Sakado and Higashimatsuyama areas are smaller but centered on local snack bars and karaoke. Regulars outnumber tourists, giving a homey feel. Concept cafes are almost nonexistent.

Access: from Ikebukuro to Kawagoe on the Tobu Tojo Line takes about 30 minutes; another 20 minutes to Sakado/Higashimatsuyama. Taxis wait at stations at night but are limited, so move before the last train.

Best time: Friday and Saturday 8–11 PM. Many hostess bars in Kawagoe require reservations, so call or LINE ahead. Snack bars accept walk-ins, but if you're new, choose a place where Japanese is spoken.
