Kumagaya, the northern hub of Saitama Prefecture. Around the station, you'll find a cluster of hostess bars, girls bars, and snack bars catering to a local crowd.
Step out of Kumagaya Station and you'll feel the air of northern Kanto. The streets in front of the station are lit with neon, bustling with local office workers and groups.
The nightlife spreads across both the north and south exits. The north side has more restaurants, while the south side is adjacent to hotels and the red-light district. It's a compact area you can explore on foot.
The main scene is hostess bars (kyabakura) and girls bars. Several are tucked into buildings near the station, with prices lower than central Tokyo. Kyabakura run about 5,000–8,000 yen for 60 minutes, girls bars 3,000–5,000 yen. Snack bars are also plentiful, popular with regular locals.
Concept cafes and lounges are scarce, but old-school snack culture is strong. Karaoke snack bars dot the area, popular with older patrons.
Access: about 40 minutes from Tokyo by Joetsu Shinkansen, or 1.5 hours by local train. Most places open from 10 PM until late. Many are closed on Sundays.
This is a locally oriented area, more suited for business travelers or resident foreigners than tourists. Some places may be tough without Japanese, but girls bars tend to be more foreigner-friendly.
Kumagaya is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
