Hubei · Huxi

Hubei · Huxi is an area along the northern shore of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture. Unlike tourist hubs like Nagahama or Hikone, it features quiet streets rooted in local life. At night, lights from snack bars and girls bars begin to appear near stations and along main roads.

Geographically, it divides into Hubei (Nagahama, Maibara) and Huxi (Takashima). Hubei is served by the Hokuriku Main Line and JR Biwako Line, while Huxi is along the Kosei Line. Car travel is the norm.

Nightlife centers on snack bars frequented by regulars. Many are small with karaoke, where conversation with the mama or staff is key. A few girls bars offer a more casual drinking experience. Kyabakura and host clubs are nearly absent, and concept cafes are rare.

Prices: snack bars run ¥5,000–10,000 including cover charge; girls bars ¥2,000–5,000. The scene is local-oriented, so you might feel like an outsider, but many places are welcoming.

Access: limited walkable options from JR stations; taxis or rental cars recommended. Nagahama Station area (Hubei) and Omi-Takashima Station area (Huxi) have slight concentrations. Best on Friday or Saturday nights.

Note: English-friendly shops are scarce. If you don't speak Japanese, bring a local friend or a translation app. Also, snack bars typically charge otōshi (cover) and a seat fee.
