Hamaotsu

At night, Hamaotsu has a calm, adult atmosphere, with the quiet surface of Lake Biwa illuminated by streetlights. Snack bars and bars frequented by local office workers and regulars line the streets, giving the area a feel of a local nightlife social scene rather than a tourist spot.

The area is within walking distance from Otsu Station and stretches along the lakeshore. The main street, Hamaotsu Shopping Street, is the center, with small shops scattered in the back alleys. There are more locals than tourists, creating a homey vibe.

The nightlife centers on snack bars and girls bars. Snack bars are traditional spots where the mama and regulars enjoy karaoke, with reasonable prices (about 2,000–3,000 yen per hour). Girls bars have young female staff serving drinks in a casual setting. There are also a few hostess bars (kyabakura) for those seeking more glamorous service.

The number of venues is not large, but each has its own character. Prices are generally lower than in Osaka or Kyoto, making it easy for first-timers. However, English support is almost nonexistent, so be cautious if you don't speak Japanese.

Access: 10-minute walk from JR Otsu Station, or right next to Keihan Hamaotsu Station. If driving, there are coin parking lots nearby, but drunk driving is strictly prohibited. Best time is 8 PM to 11 PM, and weekends are busy with locals.

Etiquette: At snack bars, enjoy conversation with the mama and regulars. At girls bars, avoid excessive physical contact with staff. At hostess bars, you won't be pressured to order drinks, but check your bill carefully.
