Tochigi's nightlife centres on the capital, Utsunomiya, known for its jazz spots and cocktail bars. It is about 50 minutes from Tokyo by Shinkansen and Oyama about 40, and the site also covers Sano/Ashikaga and Ohtawara.

Utsunomiya is the birthplace of many Japanese jazz players, including Sadao Watanabe, and many of its bartenders have won national and international cocktail competitions, according to JNTO, which recommends the city's jazz spots and cocktail bars for an evening out.
Article 5 of Tochigi's entertainment business ordinance limits after-midnight opening for hostess clubs (kyabakura) and similar venues to commercial zones of Utsunomiya designated by Public Safety Commission rule. Anywhere else in the prefecture, these venues normally close at midnight.
From Tokyo or Ueno Station, the Tohoku Shinkansen reaches Utsunomiya in about 50 minutes (JNTO). The local Utsunomiya Line takes about 100 minutes and may need one change. Oyama, in the south, is about 40 minutes by Shinkansen according to the prefectural tourism association's map. Buses and taxis leave from the west side of Utsunomiya Station.
Tochigi's pages are split into Utsunomiya and the Tochigi/Oyama Area. Search hostess clubs, girls bars and snack bars in JR Utsunomiya or Tobu Utsunomiya, or further south in Koyama, Tochigi, Sano/Ashikaga and Ohtawara.
Tochigi is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
