Itabashi and the Tobu Line area is a local nightlife district beloved by residents, a short distance from the city center. While chain izakayas line the station fronts, step into the backstreets and you'll find old-school snack bars and girls bars glowing quietly. It's not flashy, but the homey atmosphere is the real draw.
The area is spread around Itabashi Station and along the Tobu Tojo Line (Tokiwadai, Naka-Itabashi, Kami-Itabashi, etc.). Itabashi Station is served by the JR Saikyo Line and Tobu Tojo Line, making access easy. Walk through the shopping streets near each station, and you'll spot drinking spots scattered about.
The nightlife centers on snack bars and girls bars. Snack bars are often tiny, run by a single mama, with prices as low as ¥2,000–3,000 per hour. Girls bars are similarly priced and easy to drop into. There are almost no kyabakura or host clubs, and only a handful of concept cafes.
What sets this area apart is the high number of independently owned, non-chain shops. You'll hear regulars chatting with the mama, creating a warm, welcoming space. English service is rare, but a little Japanese goes a long way.
Access: about 10 minutes from Ikebukuro on the Tobu Tojo Line. Itabashi Station also has the JR Saikyo Line. Many places stay open late, but watch the last train. Friday and Saturday nights are busiest.
Dress is casual. At snack bars and girls bars, it's polite to confirm the cover charge upfront. Many places don't accept credit cards, so bring plenty of cash.
Itabashi / Tobu Line Area runs on table-service venues: kyabakura (hostess clubs), girls bars, and snack bars. You pay a set fee by the hour, with nomination (shimei) and drink charges on top, so check each venue’s all-in price before you sit down.
Itabashi / Tobu Line Area is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
Popular services in Itabashi / Tobu Line Area include girls bars (flat drink charge, conversational setting), karaoke snack bars, and hostess clubs with shimei nomination options.
