Step out of Kasai Station and you'll find backstreets lit with neon signs, buzzing with local salarymen and regulars. This area offers an authentic, non-touristy Tokyo nightlife experience.
The area centers around Kasai Station, with drinking districts on both the north and south exits. Dozens of small venues cluster within walking distance, straddling Edogawa and Koto wards, each with a slightly different vibe.
Nightlife here is dominated by hostess bars (kyabakura) and girls bars. Kyabakura are often in buildings a bit farther from the station, charging ¥5,000–8,000 per hour. Girls bars are concentrated in multi-tenant buildings near the station, more casual and cheaper (¥3,000–5,000). Snack bars are also common, offering a homey atmosphere with mama-san and regulars.
Concept cafes and host clubs are rare; the scene is old-school. Venues are small, and large hostess clubs are few, but the personal service is warm.
Access: JR Keiyo Line to Kasai Station, about 15 minutes from Tokyo Station by rapid train. Most places stay open late, but last trains are around midnight, so taxis are practical—there's a stand at the station.
First-timers should head to the girls bar street on the south exit. It's easy to enter, and some places have English menus. Kyabakura, however, are mostly Japanese-only, so check ahead if you're not confident in Japanese.
Kasai/Koto Ward Area runs on table-service venues: kyabakura (hostess clubs), girls bars, and snack bars. You pay a set fee by the hour, with nomination (shimei) and drink charges on top, so check each venue’s all-in price before you sit down.
Kasai/Koto Ward Area is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
Popular services in Kasai/Koto Ward Area include girls bars (flat drink charge, conversational setting), karaoke snack bars, and hostess clubs with shimei nomination options.
