Hikifune / Mukojima / Oshiage area

Hikifune, Mukojima, and Oshiage form a nostalgic downtown area right under Tokyo Skytree. Step off the main streets and you'll find narrow alleys lined with tiny eateries and snack bars, exuding a Showa-era vibe. Unlike touristy Asakusa, this area has an unpretentious nightlife scene frequented by locals.

Geographically, the main access points are Hikifune Station on the Tobu Skytree Line, and Oshiage Station on the Keisei Oshiage Line and Tokyo Metro Hanzomon Line. Mukojima lies between them, a quiet residential area along the Sumida River. While Skytree is the landmark, the nightlife is concentrated around the stations.

The nightlife here revolves around snack bars and girls bars. Snack bars are especially numerous, crammed into back alleys. Most are small, run by a single mama-san, and very affordable—typically ¥2,000–4,000 per hour including cover charge. Girls bars are similarly priced and easy to drop into. Kyabakura and host clubs are rare, and concept cafes are few.

Many snack bars offer karaoke, and the charm lies in the homey interaction between regulars and the mama-san. English is rarely spoken, but gestures and smiles go a long way. Girls bars have younger staff and focus on conversation. Overall, this is a laid-back, local-oriented nightlife area, distinct from tourist-heavy spots.

Access: From Tokyo Station, take the JR Sobu Line Rapid to Kinshicho (10 min), then transfer to the Tobu Skytree Line for Hikifune (5 min). Oshiage is a 15-min walk from Asakusa or one stop on the Toei Asakusa Line. Many places stay open late, but watch the last train times. Snack bars often close around midnight–1 AM, while girls bars may stay open later.

Etiquette: At snack bars, you typically pay a cover charge upfront and order drinks separately. Girls bars may charge a table fee or otoshi (snack charge). English menus are rare, so learning a few Japanese phrases helps. The snack bar streets are local territory, so keep noise down and enjoy respectfully.
