Access is a short walk from JR Shin-Okubo Station, or a walk from Shinjuku Station. Weekends are busy, so reservations are recommended. Some places cater to English or Chinese speakers, but Japanese or Korean is often needed.
Watch out for touts, especially near the station and main streets. Also, late at night there can be drunk crowds, so stay alert to avoid trouble.
Okubo/Shin-Okubo is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
