Yamaguchi's ordinance names the places where venues that entertain guests may open until 1 a.m., among them Yuda Onsen in Yamaguchi City, Buzenda-cho, Hosoecho and Takezakicho in Shimonoseki, and Ginza in Shunan. The Shinkansen from Tokyo takes about 4 hours 30 minutes.

Article 5 and Appended Table 1-2 of Yamaguchi's ordinance list where hostess clubs (kyabakura) and other venues that entertain guests may stay open until 1 a.m. In Yamaguchi City these are Sentocho, Kumanocho, Yuda Onsen 1–4 and Aoi 1; in Shimonoseki, Hosoecho 1, Buzenda-cho 1–2 and Takezakicho 1–3, each within zones set by Public Safety Commission rule.
The same table also covers Shintencho and Chuocho in Ube, Tenjin and Sakaemachi in Hofu, Mariifucho in Iwakuni, and Ginza, Minami-Ginza, Yurakucho and Miyukidori in Shunan. Yuda Onsen, which the prefecture's tourism site presents as one of Chugoku's leading hot-spring towns, is about 20 minutes from Shin-Yamaguchi Station.
Yamaguchi has five Shinkansen stations. The tourism site's guide times are about 4 hours 30 minutes from Tokyo, about 2 hours from Shin-Osaka and about 30 minutes from either Hiroshima or Hakata. Flying from Haneda takes about 1 hour 40 minutes, and Yamaguchi Ube Airport is about 40 minutes from Yuda Onsen.
NIGHT LIFE JAPAN covers Yamaguchi City, with Shin-Yamaguchi (Ogori), where the Shinkansen stops, and Yuda Onsen, and Shimonoseki City, with one area, Shimonoseki. Ube, Hofu, Iwakuni and Shunan have no areas yet.
Yamaguchi is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
