At night in Katsuura, Kamogawa, and Tateyama, away from the tourist bustle, quiet snack bars and girls bars light up where locals gather. There are few flashy neon signs for tourists, and the atmosphere is rustic, characteristic of fishing port towns.

This area is located on the Pacific coast of southeastern Chiba Prefecture, with the three cities of Katsuura, Kamogawa, and Tateyama scattered along the shore. Each is known for its fishing ports and hot springs; tourists enjoy daytime activities and then visit local nightlife spots in the evening.

The nightlife scene centers on snack bars and girls bars, with a handful of establishments in each town. Hostess bars (kyabakura) and host clubs are almost nonexistent, and concept cafes or lounges are rare. Prices are reasonable: at a snack bar, expect around 3,000–5,000 yen per hour including cover charge.

Shops are small, often with only counter seating, creating a homey atmosphere where you can get close to the mama or staff. English support may be limited, so learning a few Japanese phrases is helpful.

Access from Tokyo takes about 1.5–2 hours by limited express train. Shops are within walking distance from each station, but taxis are also available. Friday and Saturday nights are best, when local regulars fill the places.

As for etiquette, dropping in without a reservation is fine, but calling ahead for the first visit ensures a smooth experience. Karaoke is common at snack bars, so singing a song will be appreciated by locals.
