Matsuyama's nightlife is wrapped in a different kind of heat from the steam of Dogo Onsen. Passing through the arcades of Okaido and Gintengai, you'll find the neon-lit entertainment district. Local office workers and tourists mingle, and the sound of karaoke from snack bars spills out into the streets.
The main area is southeast of Okaido Station, around Hanazono-cho and Niban-cho, where nightspots are concentrated. It's within walking distance of Dogo Onsen Main Building, making it convenient for a nightcap after sightseeing.
The nightlife scene is dominated by snack bars and girls bars. Snack bars are adult social venues where you chat with the mama, costing around ¥3,000–5,000 per hour. Girls bars have younger female staff and are more affordable at ¥2,000–4,000 per hour. There are also a few hostess bars (kyabakura) for a more glamorous experience.
Concept cafes and lounges are on the rise, with themed cafes for anime and game fans. Karaoke boxes are plentiful and open late. Overall, prices are lower than in Tokyo or Osaka, making it a great introduction to Japanese nightlife.
Access is a short walk from Iyotetsu Okaido Station. From Matsuyama Airport, it's about 40 minutes by limousine bus. Peak hours are around 10 PM, and it's wise to catch the last train. English may not be widely spoken at snack bars and girls bars, so learning a few Japanese phrases helps.
Casual dress is fine, but a jacket is recommended for hostess bars or upscale snack bars. The Dogo Onsen area has many tourist-friendly spots, so it's a good place to start if you want an easy entry.
Ehime runs on table-service venues: kyabakura (hostess clubs), girls bars, and snack bars. You pay a set fee by the hour, with nomination (shimei) and drink charges on top, so check each venue’s all-in price before you sit down.
Ehime is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
Popular services in Ehime include girls bars (flat drink charge, conversational setting), karaoke snack bars, and hostess clubs with shimei nomination options.
