Tip
チップ · chippu
Also known as: チップ · chippu · Tip · 팁 · 小费 · 小費
A tip is a cash gratuity given directly to staff as a token of appreciation for service.
In Japanese nightlife, particularly in table-service venues like hostess bars and clubs, tipping is not as widespread as in Western countries, but it is practiced in certain situations.
At upscale hostess bars and clubs, guests may offer a cash tip to show appreciation for exceptional service, separate from the nomination fee or drink charges. The proper etiquette is to hand the tip directly to the staff member, without an envelope.
The amount varies depending on the venue's prestige and the service received, but a typical range is between ¥1,000 and ¥5,000. In high-end establishments, some guests give ¥10,000 or more.
When giving a tip, it is polite to make eye contact and say a simple "thank you." Tipping is entirely voluntary and should only be done when you feel the service merits it.
Note that some venues include a service charge in the bill, so it is wise to check beforehand to avoid double-tipping.
