Koga/Chikusei Area

Stepping out of the rotary in front of Koga Station, you'll see streets dotted with sparse neon signs. The warm lights of snack bars bustling with local office workers and regulars add a cozy touch to the quiet night.

The area centers around Koga Station and Shimodate Station in Chikusei City. Koga is near the Tochigi border, while Chikusei offers good access to central Ibaraki. Both have restaurant clusters within walking distance of the station.

A typical night out starts with chatting with the mama at a snack bar. There are a few hostess bars, with reasonable rates around 5,000–8,000 yen per hour. Girls bars have a casual vibe, sometimes attracting young female customers.

Concept cafes and host clubs are almost nonexistent; the area is firmly rooted in snack bar culture as adult social hubs. Locals often start at an izakaya for a light drink and then bar-hop.

Access: about 1.5 hours from Tokyo on the JR Utsunomiya Line. By car, use the Koga IC on the Tohoku Expressway. Most places close by 10 PM, so it's wise to leave before the last train.

If it's your first visit, stroll along the snack bar street near the station. If the sign says "Snack," feel free to open the door—it's that kind of place.
