Furukawa

Step out of Furukawa Station and you'll find a quiet entertainment district typical of a regional city. Along the modestly lit alleys, snack bars and girls bars frequented by local regulars line the streets.

The area is split between the east and west exits of the station, with the east side being the main strip. Nightlife spots are scattered behind the shopping arcade that extends from the station rotary. The entire district is compact and walkable.

The nightlife scene centers on snack bars and girls bars. There are also a few hostess bars (kyabakura), but they are small-scale rather than flashy large establishments. Prices are reasonable: snack bars run about ¥3,000–5,000 per hour, and girls bars around ¥2,000–4,000 including cover charge.

Hostess bars are slightly pricier, with set fees of ¥5,000–8,000. However, all venues cater to locals, so tourist traps are rare. There are no concept cafes or host clubs in this area.

Access is via JR Utsunomiya Line's Furukawa Station, about 1 hour from Tokyo and 30 minutes from Utsunomiya. Taxis wait at the station at night, but they are limited, so it's best to finish your night before the last train.

Friday and Saturday nights are the best time to visit, when local office workers and regulars fill the streets. For first-timers, starting at a snack bar or girls bar near the station is recommended. While some places may be challenging without Japanese, more shops are offering English menus.
