The main area is Naze in Amami City. Small eateries and bars line the streets near the port. The island is compact, so most nightlife spots are within walking or cycling distance.

Access: from Amami Airport, take a bus to Naze (about 1 hour). Bars open around 8 PM and most close by midnight. Weekends are busier, weekdays quiet. It's best to have a local introduction or reservation rather than dropping in.
English is rarely spoken, so learn a few Japanese phrases or hire a local guide. Cash is king; credit cards are not widely accepted.
Amami Oshima runs on table-service venues: kyabakura (hostess clubs), girls bars, and snack bars. You pay a set fee by the hour, with nomination (shimei) and drink charges on top, so check each venue’s all-in price before you sit down.
Amami Oshima is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
