Hakone and Yugawara are famous hot spring resorts, but nightlife is centered on quiet snack bars and karaoke. Nightlife options for tourists are limited, with small, locally oriented establishments scattered around.

No one comes to Hakone or Yugawara expecting nightclub bustle. Here, hot springs and tranquility take center stage, and the streets are quiet after dark. However, small snack bars and karaoke snack bars dot the area, catering to those who want a drink after their ryokan dinner.
Hakone is a sprawling hot spring resort in the mountains, with main areas around Hakone-Yumoto, Gora, and Lake Ashi. Yugawara is a hot spring town at the southern tip of Kanagawa Prefecture, bordering Shizuoka. Both areas see many tourists during the day, but nights are early and quiet.
Nightlife centers on snack bars and karaoke. Around Hakone-Yumoto Station, a handful of snack bars cater to local regulars and ryokan owners. Prices are reasonable, with cover charges around ¥1,000–2,000. Yugawara has a similar cluster of snack bars along the station front street. Kyabakura, host clubs, and girls bars are essentially nonexistent.
Concept cafes and lounges are also nearly absent. Nighttime entertainment is limited to onsen and quiet drinking. For tourists, the realistic options are drinking slowly at their ryokan or visiting one of the few snack bars to mingle with locals.
Access: Hakone-Yumoto Station is about 85 minutes from Shinjuku via Odakyu Romancecar. Yugawara Station is about 90 minutes from Tokyo Station via JR Tokaido Line. Most establishments close by 10 PM, so watch the last train.
Best time is 8–10 PM. Snack bars close early, so head out right after dinner. English is not widely spoken; learning a few Japanese phrases or asking your ryokan staff to introduce you will help.
Hakone/Yugawara runs on table-service venues: kyabakura (hostess clubs), girls bars, and snack bars. You pay a set fee by the hour, with nomination (shimei) and drink charges on top, so check each venue’s all-in price before you sit down.
Hakone/Yugawara is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
Popular services in Hakone/Yugawara include girls bars (flat drink charge, conversational setting), karaoke snack bars, and hostess clubs with shimei nomination options.
