Sagamihara/Yamato Area

The Sagamihara/Yamato area is a local favorite nightlife hideaway, a short distance from the hustle of Tokyo and Yokohama. The drinking streets near the stations glow with modest neon, bustling with office workers and regulars after work. It's not flashy, but the homey atmosphere is its charm.

Geographically, Sagamihara and Yamato cities are in northern Kanagawa Prefecture, served by the Odakyu Line and JR Sagami Line. Key hubs include Sagamihara Station, Yamato Station, and Ebina Station, with nightlife spots scattered around each. The area is spread out, so trains or taxis are convenient for moving around.

The nightlife scene centers on kyabakura (hostess bars) and girls bars. Around Sagamihara Station, there are over 10 kyabakura, and Yamato Station has a similar concentration. Prices are half of Tokyo's, averaging 3,000–5,000 yen per hour. Snack bars are also plentiful, where you can enjoy karaoke and chat with the mama or regulars. Concept cafes and lounges exist but are limited.

Many venues are local-oriented, catering to repeat customers rather than tourists. If visiting for the first time, choose a place where Japanese is spoken or go with a friend. At kyabakura, drink charges and service fees may be separate, so confirm before entering.

Access: from Shinjuku, take the Odakyu Line to Sagamihara Station (about 40 min) or Yamato Station (about 30 min). By car, use the Ken-O Expressway's Sagamihara-Aikawa IC or Yamato IC. Best time is Friday/Saturday 8–11 PM. Weekdays are quieter, allowing a relaxed experience.

Etiquette: no mandatory hostess drinks or tips at kyabakura. At girls bars, maintain respectful distance. At snack bars, wait your turn for karaoke and enjoy interacting with other patrons.
