Uji is a historic town in southern Kyoto Prefecture, known for Byodo-in Temple and the Uji River. Nightlife is limited, centered on snack bars and izakaya.
At night, Uji settles into a quiet calm after the daytime crowds disperse. As the illuminated Byodo-in reflects on the river, the lights of local snack bars and izakaya begin to glow, drawing in regulars.
Uji is about 20 minutes by train from Kyoto city center, served by the Nara Line and Uji Line. The main street from the station to Byodo-in is the shopping arcade, which becomes quiet at night.
The nightlife scene centers around snack bars and izakaya near the station and along Ujibashi-dori. Snack bars are small, karaoke-friendly spots frequented by locals. Izakaya are more visitor-friendly, offering dishes made with Uji tea and local sake.
Table-service nightlife venues like kyabakura, host clubs, or girls bars are virtually absent in Uji. Instead, snack bars and izakaya serve as social hubs. Prices are reasonable: snack bars cost around 3,000–5,000 yen including cover charge, and izakaya around 2,000–4,000 yen.
Access is on foot from JR Uji Station or Keihan Uji Station. Taxis can be scarce at night, so check the last train times. Friday and Saturday nights are best for experiencing the local vibe.
At snack bars, you may be asked for your “usual song” when requesting karaoke; if it’s your first time, just name a favorite. At izakaya, try creative dishes and matcha liqueur made with Uji tea.
Uji runs on table-service venues: kyabakura (hostess clubs), girls bars, and snack bars. You pay a set fee by the hour, with nomination (shimei) and drink charges on top, so check each venue’s all-in price before you sit down.
Uji is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
Popular services in Uji include girls bars (flat drink charge, conversational setting), karaoke snack bars, and hostess clubs with shimei nomination options.
