The nightlife scene centers around Ueda Station and Sakudaira Station. During the day, the castle town bustles with tourists, but at night it transforms into a quiet entertainment district frequented by local regulars.
In the Ueda area, shops are concentrated in the downtown area in front of Ueda Station; in the Saku area, they cluster around Sakudaira Station. Both are compact and walkable.
The main venue types are hostess bars (kyabakura), girls bars, and snack bars. Kyabakura set fees range from 5,000 to 10,000 yen, quite reasonable. Girls bars are even more casual, around 2,000 to 4,000 yen. Snack bars are adult social spots where you chat with the mama.
There are almost no concept cafes or host clubs; traditional nightlife styles prevail. The crowd is mostly local businessmen and regulars rather than tourists, giving a homey atmosphere.
Access: about 1.5 hours from Tokyo to Ueda Station by Shinkansen, and about 1 hour 20 minutes to Sakudaira Station. Most places close by 10 PM, so aim for earlier hours.
Taxis are available at the station but limited; advance booking is safer. English support is limited, so learning a few Japanese phrases will help.
