The prefectural police map marks the Gondo-machi district of Nagano City as the extended-hours zone for licensed entertainment businesses, meaning the ordinance allows them to stay open later there. The same area is where late-night entertainment restaurants may be sited; since all of it is a commercial zone, venues can open anywhere except within 50 metres of hospitals, residential child welfare facilities and the like.
Hostess clubs (kyabakura) count as licensed entertainment businesses under the law, so this zone is the one that applies to them. The prefectural seat, Nagano City, lies in the north; besides Gondo and Nagano Station Front, this site has areas for Matsumoto and Shiojiri, Ina and Suwa, and Ueda · Saku.
By Nagano City's figures, Tokyo Station to Nagano is about 1 hour 40 minutes, or 1 hour 20 on the quickest train, and Kanazawa is 1 hour 5 minutes away at best. Coming from Niigata, ride the Joetsu Shinkansen to Takasaki (about 1 hour 10) and change for roughly an hour more; from Nagoya, the Shinano limited express needs about 3 hours.
For Matsumoto, Shinshu-Matsumoto Airport has flights from Sapporo, Fukuoka, Kobe and elsewhere, with a 30-minute shuttle bus to Matsumoto Bus Terminal. By rail, the Shinano takes 113 minutes from Nagoya to Shiojiri (Yamanashi tourism site).
NIGHT LIFE JAPAN's Nagano has four areas: Gondo, Nagano Station Front, Matsumoto and Shiojiri, Ina and Suwa and Ueda · Saku. Each area page leads to its list of hostess clubs, snack bars, girls bars and lounges.
Nagano is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
Payment methods vary by venue. Check the listing and confirm with the venue before booking.
