The Oita City Tourism Association's guide calls Miyako-machi "the largest nightlife district in Oita City" and points to its yatai stall area, where you can drink casually alongside local regulars. Along the Nishi-Oita waterfront it lists cafes and shops, live music venues and night views.
From Oita Airport, the expressway airport buses reach Oita Station in about 58 minutes. Towards Beppu there are services taking about 47 minutes to Beppu Kitahama and about 53 to JR Beppu Station. The airport warns that rush-hour traffic can delay arrival.
By rail, JR Kyushu's Sonic limited express runs between Hakata and Oita/Beppu in 2 hours 1 minute at the fastest, 31 times a day each way. Miyazaki City's tourism association gives about 3 hours by train from Oita Station to Miyazaki Station.
The Oita pages come in three parts: Oita City, Beppu City and Hita City. Oita City is listed as one area for the whole city, Beppu City as Kitahama and Hita City as Hita, so start from the town you are staying in.
Oita is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
