Beppu City

Beppu's nightlife begins in the back alleys filled with hot spring steam. Unlike the bustling daytime tourist crowds, the evenings have a calm, adult atmosphere centered on snack bars and girls bars where local regulars gather.

The entertainment districts spread around JR Beppu Station and the central hot spring area of Kitahama and Nagaregawa Street. The arcade streets leading from the station to the hot spring town are packed with small eateries and snack bars.

Snack bars are the most common nightlife spots in Beppu. These homey spaces where the mama and regulars chat cost around 3,000–5,000 yen per hour. Girls bars are also plentiful, with more places offering casual drinking with young female staff. Hostess bars (kyabakura) are fewer, with a handful near the station and downtown, costing 5,000–8,000 yen per hour. Karaoke snack bars are scattered around, allowing you to enjoy singing while drinking.

Concept cafes and host clubs are almost nonexistent; the local snack bar culture is dominant. Since the scene caters more to local regulars than tourists, first-time visitors should choose an easy-entry girls bar or snack bar.

Access is within walking distance from JR Beppu Station and hot spring hotels. Best time is 8 PM to 11 PM. Early evening is when snack bars start opening, and many close after midnight. The Beppu way is to relax in the onsen first, then go for a light drink.
