The area is within walking distance from Oita Station. Shops are concentrated around Chuo-machi and Funai-machi. One street in, and you'll find quiet residential areas, but the main streets stay busy until late.
The core of this area is hostess bars (kyabakura) and girls bars. There are about 30 to 50 hostess bars, with rates averaging 5,000 to 8,000 yen per hour. Girls bars are more casual, costing 2,000 to 4,000 yen. Snack bars are also plentiful, frequented by local regulars. Concept cafes and host clubs are few.
For foreign visitors, girls bars are easier to enter. Some places now have English menus, but many are Japanese-only. Hostess bars have a system of companions and nominations, so if you're new, try a girls bar first.
Access is a 5 to 15-minute walk from Oita Station. A taxi ride is just one meter fare. Opening hours are typically 8 PM to 2 AM. Weekends get crowded, so reservations are recommended.
As for etiquette, don't respond to touts outside. Always confirm the price before entering. There have been reports of overcharging targeting drunk customers, so use credit cards only at trusted places.
