Also known as hatoma-island
Hatoma Island is a small remote island northwest of Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, with almost no nightlife. Only a few snack bars and izakaya exist, making it unsuitable for tourists seeking nightlife.
When you step onto Hatoma Island, the first thing you notice is the silence. About 40 minutes by high-speed boat from Ishigaki Island, this island of about 50 people has no traffic lights or convenience stores. At night, you only hear the waves and the wind.
In the center of the island is a small settlement with a few minshuku (guesthouses) and eateries. Facilities for tourists are limited, and only a handful of shops are open at night.
If you come expecting nightlife, you may be disappointed. Hatoma Island has no kyabakura (hostess bars), host clubs, girls bars, or other table-service nightlife. There are only 2-3 snack bars and izakaya where locals gather. Prices are reasonable, around 500 yen for a beer.
These places tend to close early, with most shutting down by 10 PM. The atmosphere is welcoming to tourists, but regulars are the main clientele.
Access is only by high-speed boat from Ishigaki Island, with the last departure in the evening, so you need to stay overnight. To enjoy the evening, consider mingling with other guests at your minshuku or stargazing.
Hatoma Island is for those seeking a quiet night away from the hustle. If you want nightlife, head to Ishigaki's entertainment district (e.g., Misaki Town).
Hatoma Island runs on table-service venues: kyabakura (hostess clubs), girls bars, and snack bars. You pay a set fee by the hour, with nomination (shimei) and drink charges on top, so check each venue’s all-in price before you sit down.
Hatoma Island is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
Popular services in Hatoma Island include girls bars (flat drink charge, conversational setting), karaoke snack bars, and hostess clubs with shimei nomination options.
