Also known as taketomi-island
Taketomi Island is a small island about 10 minutes by high-speed ferry from Ishigaki Island, known for traditional Ryukyu architecture and quiet beaches. Nightlife is limited to a few izakayas and guesthouse bars; there are no hostess bars, host clubs, or other table-service nightlife venues.
Stepping onto Taketomi Island, you immediately notice the slow pace of time. Unpaved gravel paths, red-tiled houses, and the distant sound of sanshin music. At night, the island grows even quieter, with the starry sky serving as streetlights.
The central village is compact and easily explored on foot or by rental bicycle. It's about a 10-minute walk from the ferry terminal to the village. Roads are dark at night, so a flashlight is handy.
Nightlife is extremely limited. There are no table-service nightlife venues such as hostess bars (kyabakura), host clubs, girls bars, snack bars, or concept cafes. Instead, a few small izakayas and bars run by guesthouses offer local awamori and island cuisine. Prices are reasonable, starting around 500 yen per drink.
For visitors, stargazing tours and traditional performing arts are the main nighttime activities. The island shuts down early, with most places closing by 10 PM.
Access is via high-speed ferry from Ishigaki Island, taking about 10 minutes. The last ferry departs in the evening, so day trips are common. If staying overnight, book a minshuku in advance. When walking at night, maintain quiet out of respect for residents.
Taketomi Island runs on table-service venues: kyabakura (hostess clubs), girls bars, and snack bars. You pay a set fee by the hour, with nomination (shimei) and drink charges on top, so check each venue’s all-in price before you sit down.
Taketomi Island is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
Popular services in Taketomi Island include girls bars (flat drink charge, conversational setting), karaoke snack bars, and hostess clubs with shimei nomination options.
