Atami

Atami's nightlife contrasts with the quiet hot spring town atmosphere, as neon lights in alleys near the station come alive. Even after tourists leave, local regulars keep the snack bars lit until late.

The main area is a few minutes' walk from Atami Station. Step off the main street into side alleys, and you'll find small eateries and snack bars clustered together. Unlike the ryokan district, the station area functions as a night social hub.

Snack bars are the most common nightlife option in Atami. You sit at the counter and chat with the mama or staff, with prices around 3,000–5,000 yen per hour. There are also a few girls bars for a more casual drinking experience. Karaoke snack bars are plentiful, where you can sing and mingle with locals.

Host clubs and kyabakura are almost nonexistent; instead, snack bars and girls bars dominate, catering more to local regulars than tourists. Prices are cheaper than Tokyo's entertainment districts, making it easy for first-timers.

Atami Station is about 40 minutes from Tokyo by Shinkansen. Nightlife starts around 8 PM, peaking from midnight to 1 AM. Weekends are busier, but weekdays are quiet. You can walk into snack bars without reservations; strolling along the snack bar street near the station is a good start.

Some snack bars charge a cover fee, so check before entering. English is rarely spoken, but gestures and smiles work fine. Rip-offs targeting tourists are rare, so you can relax.
