The Keio/Odakyu Line area is a local-oriented nightlife spot spread across residential neighborhoods 20–30 minutes by train from Shinjuku. Unlike the tourist-packed city center, it's perfect for those who want a relaxed, adult evening.
The area consists of small entertainment districts around stations like Chofu, Fuchu, and Seiseki-Sakuragaoka on the Keio Line, and Noborito, Mukogaoka-Yuen, and Machida on the Odakyu Line. Modest bars line the backstreets a few minutes from each station.
The nightlife centers on snack bars and girls bars. Snack bars are adult social venues where you chat with the mama, costing around ¥3,000–5,000 per hour. Girls bars have younger staff and a casual vibe, with a cover charge of ¥1,000–2,000 plus drinks. Some stations also have concept cafes and hostess bars, but they are fewer.
The appeal is experiencing real Tokyo nightlife without tourist crowds. Regulars and staff are close, creating a homey atmosphere. English-friendly shops are rare, but gestures and smiles go a long way.
Access: From Shinjuku, Keio Line limited express to Chofu takes about 15 minutes; Odakyu Line rapid express to Machida takes about 30 minutes. Last trains are around midnight, so leave by 11 PM. Weekends are busy with local office workers; weekdays are quieter and more of a hidden gem.
Note: Some snack bars are membership or introduction-only. Beginners should search for "snack bar beginner friendly." Girls bars are easier to enter, but many only speak Japanese, so a translation app helps.
Keio/Odakyu Line Area runs on table-service venues: kyabakura (hostess clubs), girls bars, and snack bars. You pay a set fee by the hour, with nomination (shimei) and drink charges on top, so check each venue’s all-in price before you sit down.
Keio/Odakyu Line Area is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
Popular services in Keio/Odakyu Line Area include girls bars (flat drink charge, conversational setting), karaoke snack bars, and hostess clubs with shimei nomination options.
