The Gotokuji, Kyodo, and Chitose-Funabashi area is a hidden nightlife spot along the Odakyu Line, with snack bars and girls bars scattered among residential streets. It features many small, locally-focused bars with a calm, non-touristy atmosphere.
This area along the Odakyu Line local train stops is a quiet residential district by day. But at night, signs for snack bars and girls bars appear here and there in alleys near the stations and behind shopping streets. There are no flashy neon lights for tourists; instead, it feels like a hidden adult retreat where regulars drink quietly.
Gotokuji, Kyodo, and Chitose-Funabashi are about 15–20 minutes from Shinjuku on the Odakyu Line. The three stations are within walking distance of each other, making the area compact. Gotokuji Station is famous for the maneki-neko (beckoning cat) temple, but its night face is a snack bar street. Kyodo has a developed shopping street, and Chitose-Funabashi has small eateries scattered in residential areas.
The nightlife centers on snack bars and girls bars. Snack bars are often small, run by a single mama, with prices around 3,000–5,000 yen per hour. Girls bars have young female staff, with cover charges of 1,000–2,000 yen and drinks 500–1,000 yen, quite reasonable. There are almost no kyabakura or host clubs, and only a handful of concept cafes.
In the alleys north of Kyodo Station, there are over a dozen snack bars clustered together. Near Chitose-Funabashi Station's south exit, a few girls bars dot the shopping street. Gotokuji Station's front area has lost some shops due to redevelopment, but a few snack bars still operate. Overall, the number of venues is not large, so it's not ideal for bar-hopping, but perfect for enjoying each place slowly.
Access is convenient via the Odakyu Line local trains. From Shinjuku, Gotokuji is about 15 minutes, Kyodo about 12 minutes, and Chitose-Funabashi about 18 minutes. Last trains are early (around midnight), so be careful. Friday and Saturday nights are busiest, but some places are lively on weekdays too.
When entering a snack bar, it's polite to say, "Mama-san, aitemasu ka?" (Is it open?). For girls bars, open the door and check inside before entering. English is rarely spoken, so learning a few simple Japanese phrases helps. Many places don't accept credit cards, so bring plenty of cash.
