Takaoka City has Shin-Takaoka Station, the stop after Toyama. JNTO introduces it as the town of a well-known temple and one of the country's three Great Buddhas, and as the home of Takaoka lacquerware, made for more than 400 years. From Tokyo, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen: on JR East's timetable the fastest service, Kagayaki 503, arrives in 2 hours 4 minutes. If you are staying in Takaoka, choose a Hakutaka, which stops at Shin-Takaoka; Hakutaka 561 takes 2 hours 39 minutes. Flying in, the bus from Toyama Airport to the station takes roughly 20 minutes.
From Osaka or Nagoya, change from a limited express to the Hokuriku Shinkansen at Tsuruga. At the 16 March 2024 timetable JR West gave a fastest time of 2 hours 35 minutes both from Osaka to Toyama and from Nagoya to Toyama. Decide whether you are staying in Toyama or Takaoka before planning the evening, and the travel stays simple.

Toyama is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
