Wakayama City

Wakayama City's nightlife has a calm, port-town atmosphere. Step off the main street and you'll find small neon-lit shops lining the alleys, with locals and tourists mingling.

The city center is split around Wakayama Station and the slightly distant entertainment district, Burakuricho. Burakuricho is an arcade street that transforms from a daytime shopping area into a nightlife spot centered on snack bars and bars.

The nightlife core consists of snack bars and girls bars. Snack bars are small, run by a mama, with reasonable prices starting at ¥3,000 per hour. Girls bars have young female staff, drink-focused, around ¥2,000–4,000 per hour. There are a few hostess bars (kyabakura) but they are smaller, with set fees of ¥5,000–8,000. Many izakayas are also welcoming to tourists.

Overall, prices are lower than Osaka or Tokyo, and most places are locally oriented. English support is limited, but some places have a vibe that's enjoyable even without Japanese.

Access is walking distance from JR Wakayama Station. Burakuricho is a 10-minute bus or taxi ride from the station. Best time is 8 PM to 11 PM. Fridays and Saturdays are busiest. Snack bars may charge an otoshi (cover charge) or table fee, so check before entering.
