Kofu City

Kofu's nightlife isn't flashy like Tokyo, but you can feel the warmth of the locals. The drinking streets near the station have modest neon lights, with office workers and tourists passing by after work.

Centered around Kofu Station, the drinking areas spread out from the south and north exits. The 'Kofu Ekimae-dori' on the south side is packed with snack bars and izakayas, while the 'Asahi-dori' on the north side has girls bars and hostess bars scattered about. It's a compact area you can explore on foot.

The main nightlife options are snack bars and girls bars. Snack bars are adult social spots where you chat with the mama, costing around ¥3,000–5,000 per hour. Girls bars have young female staff serving drinks, with a reasonable ¥2,000–4,000 per hour including drinks. There are a few hostess bars, but they're not as expensive as in Tokyo.

Concept cafes and host clubs are almost nonexistent; the scene is very locally oriented. For tourists, snack bar hopping is recommended. The mama might even give you tips on sightseeing spots.

Access is about 1.5 hours from Shinjuku on the JR Chuo Line limited express. Nightlife operates from 8 PM to midnight, peaking on Fridays and Saturdays. Many places are easy to enter without reservations.

Note that hostess bars and girls bars primarily operate in Japanese. English menus are rare, so learning a few basic Japanese phrases will help. Also, some snack bars require introductions, so for first-timers, choose places with signs outside near the station.
