Matsudo City is a bedroom community in northwestern Chiba, about 30 minutes from central Tokyo on the JR Joban Line. Around the station, you'll find hostess bars, girls bars, snack bars, and concept cafes offering a local-focused nightlife scene.
Exit Matsudo Station's east exit, and neon signs catch your eye. Small-scale hostess bars and girls bars line the streets where local office workers and students pass by. It's not flashy, but the atmosphere is homey.
Matsudo City is in northwestern Chiba, a transport hub served by the JR Joban Line and Shin-Keisei Line. The station area has large commercial facilities and restaurants, and at night, back streets reveal nightlife spots.
The nightlife center is around Matsudo Station's east exit. There are about 10 hostess bars, with rates around 5,000–8,000 yen per 60 minutes, quite reasonable. Girls bars are even more casual, with cover charges of 1,000–2,000 yen. Snack bars are often run by veteran mama-sans and filled with regulars. Unlike large entertainment districts like Kashiwa or Shinjuku, Matsudo's nightlife is locally oriented. In hostess bars and girls bars, the staff are approachable, making it easy for first-timers. At snack bars, you'll see customers enjoying karaoke.
Access: about 25 minutes from Ueno on the JR Joban Line rapid service. Last trains are around 11:30 PM, so don't drink too much. There are business hotels near the station if you want to stay overnight.
Friday and Saturday nights are best for visiting, when locals fill the area. English menus are rare, but a translation app on your phone will suffice.
Matsudo City is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
