Hakata Ward holds Fukuoka's three gateways: JR Hakata Station, Hakata Port and Fukuoka Airport. Its nights gather on the river island of Nakasu, with smaller bar districts around Hakata Station and in Kawabata.

Hakata Ward lies south-east of the city centre, and its northern half is Kyushu's crossroads: JR Hakata Station by land, Hakata Port by sea and Fukuoka Airport by air. The night centre is Nakasu, a long island between the Naka and Hakata rivers where hostess clubs (kyabakura), lounges, clubs, snack bars, girls bars and host clubs stack up in multi-tenant buildings, one of the largest entertainment districts in Kyushu.
Hakata-ekimae is an office district of banks, the chamber of commerce and company branches, with lounges and snack bars in the restaurant buildings near the station. Across the Suisha bridge east of Nakasu, Kawabata is the old town of Kushida Shrine and the Kawabata arcade; Sumiyoshi/Minoshima around Sumiyoshi Shrine and Zasshonokuma in the south of the ward have their own station-front bars. From Fukuoka Airport the Kuko subway line reaches Hakata in two stops, Nakasu-Kawabata in three and Tenjin in four. Nakasu-Kawabata, on the Kuko and Hakozaki lines, comes out at the north end of Nakasu. Hakata Station to Nakasu is walkable, so you can step off the shinkansen and head straight for the night district.
Fukuoka City's ordinance bans soliciting unspecified people in public places for adult-entertainment and hostess-style dining businesses, and waiting around to do so; since the June 2025 amendment, fines run up to 500,000 yen, or 1,000,000 yen for repeat offenders. Do not follow anyone who approaches you; check the price board for the hourly set fee, nomination (shimei) fee and drink charges before going in.
