Night in Hakata Ward begins as the neon signs of Nakasu reflect off the Naka River. Along the riverside streets, touts for kyabakura hostess bars and girls bars call out, while snack bar noren curtains sway.

Geographically, the core is Nakasu, a narrow island between the Naka and Hakata rivers, within walking distance of Hakata Station. The Daimyo area to the west has more bars and clubs for younger crowds.

Nakasu packs about 200 kyabakura, with rates from ¥5,000–10,000 per hour. Girls bars are more casual at ¥3,000–5,000. Snack bars cater to regulars but some welcome foreigners. Concept cafes focus on anime or maid themes.

Dozens of host clubs cater to women, with higher prices and separate bottle charges. Overall, Fukuoka is more affordable than Tokyo or Osaka.

Access: Nakasu-Kawabata subway station is central; 15 min walk from Hakata Station. Taxis are cheap. Best time: Friday/Saturday after 9 PM. Many places close on Sundays.
