Ueno is the night-time centre of this area. Around the Ameyoko market street, which runs about 500 m from Ueno Station to Okachimachi Station, and in Yushima west of Shinobazu Pond, hostess clubs (kyabakura), girls bars, snack bars and lounges occupy the floors of multi-tenant buildings. Asakusa, the temple town of Senso-ji, is a district of Hoppy-dori izakaya and old-fashioned snack bars after dark.
Nippori is a downtown neighbourhood with the Yanaka Ginza shopping street west of the station; Nezu, Sendagi and Yanaka are temple quarters with old shopping streets; Asakusabashi and Kuramae are wholesale districts; Uguisudani and Iriya are small bar districts north of the Yamanote line. Pick an area from the list below.
Ueno Station is the gateway: JR Yamanote, Keihin-Tohoku and shinkansen lines, the Tokyo Metro Ginza and Hibiya lines, and Keisei Ueno with direct trains from Narita Airport. For Ameyoko use the Shinobazu exit of JR Ueno or the north gate of Okachimachi; for Yushima, exit 3 of Yushima Station on the Chiyoda line is two minutes from Yushima Tenmangu shrine. Asakusa has the Ginza, Asakusa and Tobu lines; Nippori the JR Yamanote line, Keisei line and Nippori-Toneri Liner.
Tokyo's nuisance-prevention ordinance bans persistent touting in public places, and in areas designated by the Public Safety Commission it also bans waiting conspicuously to solicit for adult-entertainment and hostess-style businesses. In Taito the designated areas are Ueno 2, 4, 6 and 7-chome, Senzoku 4-chome and Nishi-Asakusa 3-chome. Do not follow anyone who approaches you; read the price board and choose for yourself.
Listed in Ueno/Asakusa/Nippori right now: Girls Bar (1 venue). You pay a set fee by the hour, with nomination (shimei) and drink charges on top, so confirm the total with each venue before you sit down.
Ueno/Asakusa/Nippori is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
Payment methods vary by venue. Check the listing and confirm with the venue before booking.
