Step out of Toyama Station and you're greeted by the calm air of the Hokuriku region. The station-front buildings are newly developed, but step into a side alley and you'll find eateries that retain a Showa-era atmosphere. The nightlife isn't flashy, but it has a warmth where locals gather.
The area stretches north and south of the station, with the main nightlife spots concentrated around the north exit. Toyama Castle Park and Sogawa-dori are within walking distance, making it easy to combine sightseeing with a night out.
Nightlife here centers on snack bars and girls bars. Snack bars offer a homey atmosphere where the mama and regulars chat; prices run about 3,000–5,000 yen per hour. Girls bars have young female staff serving drinks, costing around 2,000–4,000 yen per hour. There are almost no kyabakura or host clubs, and only a handful of concept cafes.
The scene is small but locally rooted, frequented more by business travelers and regulars than tourists. Knowing Japanese enhances the experience, but don't expect English service.
Access is a short walk from JR Toyama Station. By Shinkansen, it's about 2.5 hours from Tokyo and 20 minutes from Kanazawa. Peak hours are 8–11 PM, with last trains around 11 PM. Taxis are available at the station.
Etiquette: in snack bars, be attentive to the mama. In girls bars, a nomination fee may apply, so check before entering. Many places don't accept credit cards, so bring cash.
