Kobe's official tourism site calls Sannomiya the transport node of the city, where each line's Sannomiya station and the bus terminal meet, and says Sannomiya Center-gai runs through the area's downtown. Motomachi continues to the west as the central commercial district. This site lists Kobe venues in three areas: Sannomiya, Motomachi and Tarumi.
According to the Hyogo Prefectural Police, licensed entertainment businesses such as hostess-style lounges may in principle open from 6:00 until midnight. In the category 4 districts of Sannomiya, Fukuhara, Kanda-shindo and Uomachi, they may stay open until 1:00, except pachinko parlours and game centres.
Himeji's tourism guide gives about 3 hours 10 minutes from Tokyo by Nozomi, though some Nozomi trains skip Himeji, and about 28 minutes from Shin-Osaka by Shinkansen. On conventional lines, the JR Special Rapid links Osaka with Himeji in about 57 minutes and Sannomiya with Himeji in about 37.
Kobe's tourism site says Osaka is 21 minutes away at the fastest and Kyoto 52. The Bay Shuttle boat crosses between Kansai International Airport and Port Island in about 30 minutes, the Port Liner runs on to Sannomiya in about 18, and Kobe Airport to Himeji takes about an hour with a change to the Special Rapid.
The Hyogo page has four major areas: Kobe (Sannomiya, Motomachi, Tarumi), Nishinomiya/Amagasaki/Itami/Takarazuka (Nishinomiya/Koshien-guchi/Ashiya, Amagasaki, Takarazuka, Itami), Akashi/Himeji/Kakogawa (Himeji, Akashi, Kakogawa, Ono) and Tanba Sasayama/Toyoka (Tambashi, Mita City, Toyooka, Sasayama City).
Hyogo's anti-touting ordinance has made northern Sannomiya a no-touting district since 1 October 2015, and the areas northwest of Hankyu Nishinomiya-Kitaguchi Station and south of JR Koshien-guchi Station in Nishinomiya since 1 May 2024. Touts who ignore an order face a fine of up to 50,000 yen and publication of their name. Do not follow street touts; contact a venue directly through its listing.
Listed in Hyogo right now: Concept Cafe (1 venue) and Girls Bar (1 venue). You pay a set fee by the hour, with nomination (shimei) and drink charges on top, so confirm the total with each venue before you sit down.
Hyogo is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
