Kobe's nightlife centres on Sannomiya and Motomachi. Six stations (JR, Hankyu, Hanshin, two subway lines and the Port Liner) meet at Sannomiya, and the whole city centre sits within 2 km between the sea and the mountains.

Sannomiya is the heart of Kobe. JR Sannomiya, Hankyu and Hanshin Kobe-Sannomiya, the Seishin-Yamate and Kaigan subway lines and the Port Liner all stop here, and the city is rebuilding the station fronts as one connected 'eki-machi' space. The night venues cluster north of Hankyu Kobe-Sannomiya Station, from Sankita-dori to Higashimon-gai, with hostess clubs (kyabakura), girls bars, snack bars and lounges sharing multi-tenant buildings.
Motomachi, next door to the west, is the district of Nankinmachi (Chinatown) and the former foreign settlement, reached from Sannomiya on foot through the shopping arcades. The city centre fits within 2 km north to south between sea and mountains, so everything between Sannomiya and Motomachi is walkable. From Osaka-Umeda, the JR Kobe line, Hankyu Kobe line and Hanshin main line all reach Sannomiya. From Shin-Kobe shinkansen station it is one subway stop on the Seishin-Yamate line; from Kobe Airport the Port Liner runs straight to Sannomiya. The Kobe Sannomiya Hankyu Building, opened in 2021, and the rebuilt Sankita Plaza are the usual evening meeting points.
Under Hyogo Prefecture's touting-prevention ordinance, the northern part of Sannomiya (parts of Kano-cho, Nakayamate-dori, Shimoyamate-dori, Kitanagasa-dori and Sannomiya-cho) has been a no-touting district since October 2015: touting, solicitation and waiting for customers on the street are banned, with a fine of up to 50,000 yen for ignoring an order. Do not follow anyone who approaches you; choose your venue yourself.

Kobe is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
