Sannomiya is the centre of Kobe, where six stations meet: JR, Hankyu, Hanshin, two subway lines and the Port Liner. The night venues gather north of Hankyu Kobe-Sannomiya Station, from Sankita-dori to Higashimon-gai.
JR Sannomiya, Hankyu and Hanshin Kobe-Sannomiya, Sannomiya on the Seishin-Yamate and Kaigan subway lines, and Sannomiya on the Port Liner: the names differ slightly, but they are one walkable district. From Osaka-Umeda take JR, Hankyu or Hanshin; from Shin-Kobe it is one subway stop; from Kobe Airport the Port Liner runs straight in.
The bar district lies north of Hankyu Kobe-Sannomiya Station. This has been the face of Kobe since Hankyu reached Sannomiya in 1936; the Kobe Sannomiya Hankyu Building was rebuilt in 2021, Sankita-dori became a pedestrian-first street, and Sankita Plaza at the east exit (known locally as Pai-yama) returned as the standard meeting spot. North from there, in Higashimon-gai and Ikuta-shindo, hostess clubs (kyabakura), girls bars, snack bars and lounges occupy the floors of multi-tenant buildings.
Sannomiya Center-gai and the Santica underground mall to the south are the shopping and dining side. Remember: north for the night.
Northern Sannomiya (parts of Kano-cho, Nakayamate-dori, Shimoyamate-dori, Kitanagasa-dori and Sannomiya-cho) is a no-touting district under Hyogo Prefecture's ordinance. Touting, solicitation and waiting for customers on the street are banned, and ignoring an order carries a fine of up to 50,000 yen. Do not follow anyone who approaches you; read the price board and choose for yourself.
