Kumamoto's nightlife gathers in the Shimotori and Shinshigai arcades east of Kumamoto Castle and the Hanabatacho and Karashimacho blocks beside them, all within a walk of the Torichosuji, Hanabatacho and Karashimacho tram stops.

Kumamoto's city centre runs from Kumamoto Castle in the north to JR Kumamoto Station in the south on the right bank of the Shirakawa, and the city plans it as 'two cores, three malls': the Torimachi and Sakuramachi cores joined by the Kamitori, Shimotori and Shinshigai arcades. The night venues concentrate from Shimotori into Shinshigai and in Hanabatacho and Karashimacho just west, with hostess clubs (kyabakura), lounges, snack bars, girls bars and host clubs in the multi-tenant buildings behind the arcades.
Kengun to the east along the tram line, Ueki to the north and Kikuchi and Ozu in the outskirts have local snack bars by their stations and main roads. Pick an area from the list below.
From JR Kumamoto Station the tram is the easy way into the centre, with a flat adult fare of 200 yen. Torichosuji is the stop for the north end of Shimotori; Hanabatacho and Karashimacho are the stops for Shinshigai and Hanabatacho. The tram has run since 1924, and Karashimacho is where you change between the Kami-Kumamoto and Tasakibashi branches. From Aso Kumamoto Airport, limousine buses run to the Sakuramachi bus terminal.
Kumamoto City's anti-touting ordinance has been enforced since April 2019: in the central no-touting district, street touting and waiting for customers are banned, with a fine of up to 50,000 yen for ignoring an order. The city warns that people led in by touts have been overcharged. Do not follow anyone who approaches you; read the price board and choose for yourself. The Kamitori, Shimotori and Sunroad Shinshigai arcades are no-smoking zones.

Kumamoto City is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
